Art Nouveau Teaspoons & Tongs Set-Cooper Bros-1913
Here we have a very stylish cased set of good quality Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Teaspoons and Sugar Tongs. Both teaspoons and tongs are decorated with a distinctively Art Nouveau fan and thread pattern. The come in their original case which is marked for retailer Robert Curtis & Son of Hull.
The spoons and tongs are made by well known silversmiths Cooper Brothers & Sons in Sheffield and date to 1913, just before the start of World War One. Established as Cooper Brothers in 1866, the firm initially produced just silver plate but by 1895 they were Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd and began to produce very high quality flatware and cutlery. They remained a family business until they were finally bought out in 1983.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that is to be expected after over 100 years of use. The box is also in good condition with a working clasp and hinges and just a few small scuffs to the exterior. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The spoons are each 10.7cm / 4.2" long, the sugar tongs are 9.5cm / 3.75" long and the full set (unboxed) weighs a very substantial 91.9g / 3.24oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the teaspoon stems and the inside of one arm of the sugar tongs are all crips and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the gothic date letter "v" for 1913 and the CB&S makers' mark for Cooper Brothers & Sons Ltd. There is also a registered design number of 605905 which similarly dates the design of the spoons and tongs to 1913.
