Art Nouveau Silver Mustard Pot, Birmingham, 1906

This is an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Mustard Pot from the Edwardian era. The mustard pot stands on four spreading feet and has a cutaway design with Rennie Mackintosh style tree decorations on the panels. The lid is domed and there is matching decoration on the thumb rest. It comes with its original blue glass liner.
The mustard pot was made in Birmingham by renowned silversmiths Levi & Salaman and dates to 1906. Founded by Phineas Levi and Joseph Salaman in 1870, Levi & Salaman quickly established a reputation for high quality silverware and remained in business for fifty years until they were merged into Barker Brothers in 1921, with the brand name continuing on through the twenties.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver, no chips or cracks in the glass liner and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after nearly 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot measures 6.2cm / 2.4ins from rim to handle, 3.7cm / 1.4ins across and stands 4.1cm / 1.6ins high. Without the glass liner it weighs in at 25.9g / 0.91oz of solid Sterling Silver and all in it weighs 44.5g / 1.57oz.
The hallmarks, on one side of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter g for 1906 and the L & S makers' mark for Levi & Salaman. On the other side is the registered design number 435134, which dates the original design to 1904.
