Art Nouveau Silver Bouillon Spoon, J. Rodgers 1925
Although made in the mid-1920s, this Sterling Silver Bouillon Spoon has a distinctively Art Nouveau style with its trefoil finial and sinuous line decoration. We can sometimes try to pigeonhole styles into exact dates but there is always overlap and evolution rather than hard cut off points.
Bouillon spoons are basically small soup spoons and were traditionally used for eating clear soups or consommes. This spoon was made in 1925 in Sheffield by famous cutlers and silversmiths Joseph Rodgers & Sons, a firm founded in 1862 who produced high quality silver tableware and flatware up until the late 1930s.
This is a well made spoon in a good gauge of silver and is in very good condition with no dings or dents and only the superficial surface wear you would expect from an item of this age. It is perfectly usable for soup today or could equally be used for serving table sauces or simply added to a collection. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The bouillon spoon is 13.6cm long and weighs a hefty 30.5g of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are well struck and very clear to read. They are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter "h" for 1925 and the JR & S makers' mark alongside their trademark star and cross for Joseph Rodgers & Sons Ltd.
