Antique Asparagus Chafing Dish by Elkington
A truly fine quality chafing dish by the finest English silversmith for silver plated wears, Elkington and Company. Elkington received various royal warrants of appointments, and also an Imperial and Royal Warrant of Appointment from the emperor of Austria.
This example is most unusual with a very simple style, a backlash to the earlier highly decorative Victorian style. The simple and very stylish shape has a hand carved ebony handle each side.
The lid is lifted to reveal a trivet where the cooked asparagus would sit. Under this is a tray to catch any drips of water or melted butter. Under the tray is where the hot water would be placed to keep the asparagus warm.
The underside of the dish is fully marked for the famous silversmith and being Elkington has a date letter which dates this piece to 1887.
A fine and most unusual serving piece in excellent condition. Measuring 12" handle to handle excluding the handles measures 9 1/4" x 7" and standing 5" to the top of the lid handle.
