Description
This is a fine quality antique English traditional 19th century Georgian Adam style fire grate, incorporating a neo-classical design, made from solid cast iron and brass, circa 1930, in excellent original condition.
Benefitting from a freestanding Adam style neo-classical / renaissance design, which was a departure from the more formal Georgian design, this dog basket is designed with a shaped & carved floral cartouche & lattice solid backplate, which stands on the floor and is supported by down swept sides.
The fire basket retains its original removable floor grate, with three horizontal fire bars and an embossed solid brass frieze below, interspersed with decorative medallion panels and scroll work detail. The fire basket is flanked by stunning quality solid brass cabriole shaped scroll feet, which are set at a 45-degree angle. The brass legs are also embossed with medallions and scroll work detail.
The internal floor grate can be removed from the basket, allowing for easy cleaning. The dog basket can be used with either wood or coal. This Adams style fire grate is constructed of cast, hand forged iron and solid brass. The open fire grate boasts an attractive finish, giving it an attractive colour and appearance.
This neo-classical log basket would look superb in a variety of hearths or fireside locations. It would certainly grace any home and is a great investment as it not only extremely functional but also highly decorative, which can also house floral displays.
History of the Adams Style:
The Adam style (also called Adamesque or the Style of the Brothers Adam) is an 18th-century neoclassical style of interior design and architecture, as practised by Scottish architect William Adam and his sons, of whom Robert (1728–1792) and James (1732–1794) were the most widely known.
The Adam brothers advocated an integrated style for architecture and interiors, with walls, ceilings, fireplaces, furniture, fixtures, fittings and carpets all being designed by the Adams as a single uniform scheme. Their style is commonly known under the mistaken plural "Adams style".
The Adam style found its niche from the late 1760s in upper-class and middle-class residences in 18th-century England, Scotland, Russia (where it was introduced by Scottish architect Charles Cameron), and post-Revolutionary War United States (where it became known as Federal style and took on a variation of its own). The style was superseded from around 1795 onwards by the Regency style and the French Empire style (source: )
