6 x Victorian Silver Teaspoons, Mappin & Webb 1898
Here we have a very fine set of 6 ornate Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons. The spoons have shell bowls, twist stems and double spiral finials. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The teaspoons are made by world famous silversmiths Mappin & Webb in Sheffield and date to 1898. The firm was founded by Joseph Mappin Sr in 1810 but in the 1850s it split into Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. The latter was the more successful and in 1902 bought Mappin Brothers to reunite the family business. The Mappin family remained in control until the company was merged with Elkington & Co and Walker & Hall to form British Silverware in 1963.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and only the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 11.5cm / 4.5ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a substantial 85.9g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks on the undersides of the stems are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter f for 1898 and the M & W makers' mark for Mappin & Webb. There is also a round, belted stamp next to the hallmarks which is difficult to read but may be a registered design no.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the spoons.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
