6 x Victorian Silver Teaspoons, JW&Co, Exeter, 1878
This is an attractive Set of Six Victorian Sterling Silver Teaspoons. The spoons are in the classic Old English style with the addition of chased floral and geometric decoration down the fronts of the stems. There are blank cartouches at the top of each stem.
The teaspoons were made in Bristol by Josiah Williams & Co and assayed in Exeter in 1878. Josiah Williams & Co of Bristol were a hugely successful firm of silversmiths, the biggest in England outside of London, Birmingham and Sheffield. They traced their history back to Robert Williams succeeding to the business of William Woodman in around 1838. The firm passed through several generations of the Williams family becoming Josiah Williams & Co in 1878.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 145 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each spoon is 14cm / 5.5ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a substantial 111.8g / 3.94oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter B for 1878, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.W & Co makers' mark for Josiah Williams & Co.
