2 x Victorian Silver Salts, William Hutton, 1887

This is a fine quality Pair of Victorian Sterling Silver Open Salts with Gilt Interiors. The salts are melon shaped with alternating panels of plain and vine engraved decoration. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The salts were made in London by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and date to 1887. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into trouble in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each salt is 4.4cm / 1.7ins in diameter and stands 2cm / 0.79ins high. The pair together weighs in at a respectable 26.6g / 0.94oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter M for 1887, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the E H makers' mark for Edward Hutton, who was head of William Hutton & Sons at this point in time.
Shipping in the UK is £6.50 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
