2 x Art Nouveau Silver Bonbon Dishes, B'ham, 1899
Here we have an elegant pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bonbon Dishes. The dishes have oval bases, lattice ends and flowing flowers and foliage around the rims and bodies.
The bonbon dishes are made in Birmingham by silversmiths Vale Brothers & Sermon and date to 1899. Vale Brothers & Sermon were founded around 1880 and were active as both electroplaters and silversmiths at premises in Spencer Street in the heart of Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. They primarily produced good quality tableware, assayed in either Birmingham or Chester, and remained in business until around 1916.
Condition is good with just a few small dings in the bases and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each dish is 12cm / 4.7ins long by 8.5cm / 3.3ins wide and stands 2.2cm / 0.87ins high. The pair together weigh in at a very respectable 78.5g / 2.77oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the side rims of each dish, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1899 and the V B & S in a shield makers' mark for Vale Brothers & Sermon.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the dishes.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
