2 x 19th C. Swedish Silver Dishes, G.F, 1843
Here we have an attractive pair of Swedish 800 Silver Shallow Dishes from the early 19th century. The dishes are oval in shape with plain central bases and borders decorated with an embossed pattern of birds and flowers. They are a complimentary rather than matching pair as the design of each border is different.
The dishes are most probably pin or trinket dishes and would certainly look great on a dressing table or desk. Alternatively they may have been saucers or stands for something on the dining table and would work perfectly as spoon rests or to place a mustard pot or small sauce boat on to.
The dishes are made in Stockholm, Sweden by a silversmith with the makers' mark G.F. and date to 1843. Unfortunately we have been unable to identify G.F. thus far but clearly he or she was a very accomplished silversmith.
Condition is good with just a couple of truly tiny dings in the base of one dish which also has some very shallow scratching on the underside. Overall they are doing well after 180 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each dish is 10.7cm / 4.2ins by 8.8cm / 3.4ins and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 67.6g / 2.38oz of solid silver.
The Swedish hallmarking system is long established and very reliable. These dishes are stamped on the undersides of the bases with the three crowns in a trefoil for Swedish made silver of at least 800/1000 grade, the crowned figure assay mark for Stockholm, the date code N4 for 1843 and the G.F. makers' mark.
