Pair of Art Nouveau Silver Candlesticks B'ham 1919
Here we have a stylish pair of Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Candlesticks. The candlesticks have broad circular bases, which are filled for stability, from which rise tapering slender stems to bowl sconces with a broad flat rim.
The candlesticks are made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths S. Blanckensee & Son and date to 1919. The firm was originally established in Bristol by Abraham Solomon Blanckensee in 1826, who then moved to Birmingham shortly afterwards. He worked with various partners until striking out on his own in 1858. The company was renamed S. Blanckensee & Son in 1879 and remained in business up until the start of the Second World War.
The candlesticks have certainly seen some use but are in sound condition with just a few dings and dents to tell the story of their 100+ years of service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick stands 13.8cm / 5.8ins high and is 9.2cm / 3.6ins in diameter across the base. The pair together weigh in at 462.8g / 16.3oz but this does of course include the filler material in the base.
The hallmarks on the bases are a little rubbed through many years of cleaning but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter u for 1919 and the S.B. & S. Ld makers' mark for S. Blanckensee & Son Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £10 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
