Edwardian Silver Dwarf Candlestick Birmingham 1909
This is a very elegant Edwardian Sterling Silver Dwarf Candlestick from the start of the 20th century. The candlestick was made by silversmith Henry Matthews in Birmingham and dates to 1909. Henry Matthews started working from premises in Vittoria Street in the heart of Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter in the early 1890s and remained in business up until around 1930. He was particularly known for his high quality desk items and gentleman's accessories.
This Dwarf Candlestick is nicely made with a broad circular base, ring decoration and a well shaped sconce. It is nice and stable and has a felt cover on the base. This type of small candlestick was generally used on a desk to heat sealing wax before applying it to letters and documents. For this reason they are usually found as singles as against decorative candlesticks which most often come as pairs or more. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Condition is generally good with a couple of tiny dings and just the minor wear and tear that you would expect in an item that is 111 years old. The candlestick is 6.5cm high and 7.3cm in diameter across the base. It weighs 173.2g but this does include the ballast material put in the base for stability.
The hallmarks on the side of the base are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter "k" for 1909 and the HM makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
