2 x Mid-Century Sterling Silver Candlesticks, 1956
Here we have a fine quality Pair of Mid-Century Sterling Silver Candlesticks in the Georgian style. The candlesticks have round bases, weighted for stability, with gardooned top rims. The stems are baluster shaped with a circular knop at top and bottom and the sconces are urn shaped. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.
The candlesticks were made in Birmingham by Charles S. Green & Co Ltd, with one dating to 1956 and one to 1959. Charles Stevenson Green was a grandson of the original Charles Green who founded his firm in Birmingham in 1824, later becoming Charles Green & Son. Originally a partner in this firm with his brothers Lionel and Roland, Charles S. Green left in 1904 to set up his own company Charles S. Green & Co Ltd. Both companies were very successful with Charles S. Green & Co remaining in business up until around 1990 and Charles Green & Son still going strong today.
Condition is very good, with just a few little dings around the bottom rims plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
Each candlestick stands 19.1cm / 7.5ins high and is 10.5cm / 4.1ins in diameter across the base. The pair togther weigh in at 908g / 32oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the bases.
The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter G for 1956 or K for 1959 and the C S G & Co makers' mark for Charles S Green & Co Ltd.
Shipping in the UK is £16 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value and the weight of the candlesticks.
Overseas customers, please ask us about shipping costs to your country before making a purchase.
