Description:
Here is a fine quality antique English early Victorian linen press, constructed from top quality flame mahogany, circa 1840, in excellent original condition. The top section supports a pretty drop down (detachable) protruding moulded cornice, above two exquisite flame mahogany doors, with inset rectangular panels. The left door features its original brass locking latches. The right-hand door retains its original working brass lever lock (with working key), original brass door closure strip and the original hinges (on both doors). The doors open to reveal a bank of four oak lined linen trays. Below, the base section comprises four drawers in a two-over-two design. The drawers are constructed with fine hand dovetail joints and cock-beaded fronts and the drawer linings and bottoms are constructed from solid oak. The drawer fronts retain their original turned mahogany knobs and brass lever locks. The press is raised on its original turned feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. The linen press dismantles into three sections, allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom.
This is a sought-after linen press due to its quality construction, incorporating fine quality flame mahogany timbers (at this time, England was importing top quality mahogany timbers from the colonies). The linen press is designed in the classic Georgian style, with simple, pronounced clean lines and a focus on symmetry.
The linen press has a rich red-brown mahogany colour. As it boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination this can only be achieved through age and years of care and cleaning it has received.
This item is an excellent investment but also very practical for storage and would look superb in a variety of rooms, especially the bedroom. This item would certainly grace any home. So, don’t miss out your chance to own a lovely piece of antique furniture.
