Circa 1840 Carved Neo Renaissance Armoire Wardrobe
We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare one of a kind, fully restored, Important Neo Renaissance Armoire Wardrobe hand carved in France circa 1840 with unique Armorial Coat of Arms plaques
Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price
Where to begin, this piece has been on a journey, I purchased it in unrestored condition from a private client in Austria, it had by repute came from a marvelous castle in Italy, originally it is believed to have been carved in a Paris workshop with some connections to a Royal Family hence the Royal Armorial Coat of Arms panels in each door.
It looks to be some kind of union piece, perhaps a marriage or agreement of some kind as there are two types or Armorials in each door, these have Cherub panels in between, sideways facing Lions for the English Royal Family and further more Cherubs, the sides have large Cherub winged angels on either side at the top and full Lion's heads to the base finished with oversized Lion's hairy paw feet, lastly the drawers are detailed with sideways facing Dragons
To say this piece is a tour de force of carving is an understatement, each one of these panels when they come up in a retail setting sells for approximately £10,000, it is amazing this piece hasn't been broken up and sold in pieces many years ago which was the fashion for a long period of time, it also makes this even rarer to find it complete and original
In terms of the restoration, there were multiple pieces that had come loose over the years, luckily the previous owner had kept everything, my cabinet makers has reattached and restored all the timber where needed, my French polisher has lightly washed the piece back and traditionally French polished it, the idea being to remove the century's of dirt and bring out the colour
The timber is Chestnut with oak interior, the original lock and key are present and operating perfectly, all the shelves are removable and a hanging rail can be fitted should the new owner wish. The insides was lined with the fabric you can see in the middle of the 20th century
