William Gard, Exeter Georgian Bracket/Table Clock
A quality Georgian bracket/table clock by William Gard of Exeter. An arched top, flame mahogany case of neat proportions. A gilded brass edging to the dial and standing on ogee bracket feet. Brass fretwork to the case sides with silk backing. An arched silvered dial with blued steel hands and 5 minute outer dial markers. A strike/silent to the arch and a rarer feature of a circular date dial at the dial lower section. A fine quality, twin fusee, verge escapement mechanism striking the hours on a bell. A well engraved border backplate to the mechanism. A pull repeat cord to the case side. A glass back door showing the mechanism. Circa 1795.
The maker, William Gard was born in Exeter, Devon in 1767. He was a talented maker and worked on the Exeter Cathedral clock in 1797. He died in 1805 and was noted in the Exeter newspaper as 'a respectable watchmaker of this city'.
Height (handle down) 14 1/2" / 38cms Width 10 1/2"/ 27cms Depth 7" / 18cms.
