Victorian Painting of 3-Masted Ship "City of York"
A striking gouache of a 19th century sailing ship signed by J Hall and inscribed "Barque 'City of York' Master William Clark". The painting is in a wooden gilded frame.
The City of York, a 3 masted iron hulled barque, was built in Glasgow in 1869 by J Elder & Co. The ship was lost, along with Captain Jones and 10 other crewmen off Western Australia after making a record time of 90 days from San Francisco on the 12th of July 1899. Approaching Rottnest, WA, she hit a reef and was lost. The anchor was recovered in 1959 and is now on display near the main jetty at Rottnest.
The painting is 49.5 cm x 39.5 cm
