This is an exceptional small watercolour by French artist Henri-Xavier Gruyer. I can find little on Gruyer, he is clearly a very skilled artist and one of his larger scale paintings sold at Christies in 2008. He seems to be at the cusp of romanticism and impressionism.

This painting is of an artist painting while sitting on a beach. I believe the sitter to be Eugene Louis Boudin. There is a small very worn photo that accompanies the painting which again I believe to be Boudin. The painting is beautifully executed and I feel there is a warm friendship between the artist and the sitter. The painting is signed by Gryer bottom left and to the bottom right it is dated 1883 and Dienville where it was painted.

This original watercolour painting is on paper which is 18.5cm x 13.5cm.

Condition.
The condition is very good. There is some discolouration to the back of the paper. There is some light surface dirt to the very top of the painting.
