This is an exceptional small original watercolour by French artist Henri-Xavier Gruyer. I can find little on Gruyer, he is clearly a very skilled artist and one of his larger scale paintings sold at Christies in 2008. He seems to be at the cusp of romanticism and impressionism. I am selling a second painting by him that I believe the sitter is French impressionist Eugene Louis Boudin, so Gruyer certainly mixed in the impressionist circles.

The painting itself is depicts two girls rowing a small boat, with stormy weather approaching. The painting is signed by Gryer bottom left and to the bottom right it is dated 1883 and Dienville where it was painted.

This original watercolour painting is on paper which is 18.5cm x 13.5cm.

Condition.
The condition is very good. There is some discolouration to the back of the paper.
