We are offering this very attractive watercolour landscape of Corfe Castle by the artist Arthur Cecil Fare, who has initialled the painting in the lower left hand corner A.C.F. The watercolour depicts a view of Corfe Castle on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset and the landscape below it with some cows grazing. Please note that A. C. Fare is erroneously, but commonly, known as Arthur Charles Fare, but we have checked woth his birth record and Cecil is correct.

Corfe Castle is a fortification standing above the village of the same name on the Isle of Purbeck peninsula in the English county of Dorset. Built by William the Conqueror, the castle dates to the 11th century and commands a gap in the Purbeck Hills on the route between Wareham and Swanage. The first phase was one of the earliest castles in England to be built at least partly using stone when the majority were built with earth and timber. Corfe Castle underwent major structural changes in the 12th and 13th centuries.

In 1572, Corfe Castle left the Crown's control when Elizabeth I sold it to Sir Christopher Hatton. Sir John Bankes bought the castle in 1635, and was the owner during the English Civil War. While Bankes was fighting in London and Oxford, his wife, Lady Mary Bankes, led the defence of the castle when it was twice besieged by Parliamentarian forces. The first siege, in 1643, was unsuccessful, but by 1645 Corfe was one of the last remaining royalist strongholds in southern England and fell to a siege ending in an assault. In March that year Corfe Castle was slighted on Parliament's orders. Owned by the National Trust, the castle is open to the public and in 2018 received around 237,000 visitors.called Bristol 1904 Arts It is protected as a Grade I listed building and a Scheduled Monument.
Arthur Cecil Fare 1876-1958, was a watercolour painter of landscapes and architectural subjects, who was born in Bath on the 29th May, 1976. He was an elected Member and regular exhibitor at the West of England Academy and showed 106 paintings there between 1922 and 1956. He was also a Member of the Bristol Savages and their President in 1927. He showed 200 works with them between 1922 and 1958.

Apart from his artistic work, he was a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects and a practising architect. He played tennis, loved swimming and playing chess.

In 1898, he married Marie Josephine Chedgzoy (1875-1955). In the a901 Census he and Marie were living in Tottenham London and he was listed as a Perspective Artist, as was the case in 1911, but they were living in Finchley.

By the 1921 Census, they were living at 12 St. John's Road, Clifton Bristol and he is listed as an architect. They apparently had no children.

As well as West country landscapes, he painted in France, Italy, Spain and Belgium. The Bristol City Art Gallery holds some of his works. He died at his home at 23 Upper Belgrave Road, Bristol on 7th October, 1958. He left the large sum, for the time, of over £28,000.

He is listed on the Bristol Savages website (now called Bristol 1904 Arts, due to a ridiculous accusation of cultural appropriation from the wokerati of Bristol in 2020) , and in Hidden Talents, A Dictionary of Neglected Artists by Jeremy Wood. Auction results for works by this artist may be found at findartinfo.com 48, artprice.com 139, and arcadja.com 59.
