We are offering for sale is very large, rare MURANO glass lamp base which, in our opinion, dates circa 1950/60. The island of Murano is in the Venetian Lagoon and is where all the Murano glass factories are situated. During the period of the 1950s/60s large quantities of mainly large, beautiful lamps were blown, the majority of which were exported to the USA, which is why they are rarely seen in the UK. We imported this lamp base into the UK from the US some years when we had our Gallery in Surrey.

The entire lamp to the top of the brass bayonet fitting measures 28", and the glass section measures 24". The lamp is of teardrop form with three bands of striped colour in wine, raspberry and dusty pink, swirling upwards and around. The diameter of the bulbous part of the lamp is 10" narrowing to 2 1/4" at the top. The base of the lamp is gilt metal, possibly brass.

The lamp has been completely rewired and has a new brass lampholder, which takes a standard wide bayonet bulb. The flex is gold coloured. However, to comply with British Standards, we advise that the wiring be checked by a certified electrician. We are selling this lamp without shade or shade holder, as we feel it would be better for the new owner to choose these to suit their decor.
