Regency Mahogany Inlaid Workbox
Regency mahogany inlaid workbox
This Regency mahogany inlaid workbox would have been made circa 1810
Made of a superbly chosen cut of timber, this workbox (formerly a tea poy) is a magnificent statement piece.
Originally made to store tea, that at the time was a very precious valuable commodity, and was locked away to keep from being pilfered by the staff. Only the owner and butler would have keys to this item.
In time tea became less expensive and the thought of locking away tea has become amusing, but in the Regency period, it was a serious consideration. Hence these items were made to be displayed in prominent areas to show the owners success and wealth by having the financial muscle to have the precious tea.
In the early part of the 20thc,the interior was changed and made into the workbox, something that is more practical for modern living.
The box is supported by 4 ring turned supports set at an angle, going down to the inlaid platform base.
The platform has the four legs that support the table coming from it, that are inlaid. The legs have brass paws with castors under.
To each end there is lion head ring handle inset inside the ebony moulding.
