Planished Pewter Milk Jug, Sheffield, 1926-39
This is a nicely made Pewter Milk Jug that dates to between 1926 and 1939. The jug is made by Viner's Ltd of Sheffield under the Craftsman Pewter brand that they used between those dates.
The jug is in an Arts & Crafts style with it's studded belly band and all-over planished or hammered finish but is somewhat later than the acknowledged Arts & Crafts period. Whilst we like to pigeonhole styles into certain dates, this jug is proof that even at the height of Art Deco products were still being produced in older styles.
The jug is in very good condition with no dings, dents or splits and just the surface wear that you would expect from many years of use. It still retains quite a shine, reminding us that pewter was often known as the "poor man's silver" and was not the dull grey colour that is often associated with it. Pewter was a very popular material in the 20s and 30s, at a time when silver was beyond the financial reach of most people. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The jug is 9cm / 3.5" in diameter, 12cm / 4.75" from lip to handle and stands 7cm / 2.75" high to the top of the handle. It weighs 174.1g / 6.14oz.
It is clearly marked on the bottom as "CRAFTSMAN PEWTER, SHEFFIELD."
Shipping in the UK is £6 by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed For Parcel Post.
