Mid Victorian Bird's Eye Maple Writing Table

Mid 19th Century Victorian Period Bird's Eye Maple Free Standing Writing Table by Doveston, Bird and Hull - Manchester - 36"w x 20.5"d x 29"h
The recently relined blue gilt tooled leather top sits above a thumbnail moulded edge above two mahogany lined drawers, with one drawer retaining the original maker's impress mark, 'Doveston, Bird and Hull' as seen in the images attached.
The drawer fronts are fitted with original fluted knobs and bold cockbeadings to the front and to the reverse veneered panels and mouldings.
The intricate carved writing table is made in the solid for the most part, with tightly carved fretwork decoration, reeded columns and carved capitols that terminate in downswept legs with carved feet that stand on concealed gilt brass castors.
The writing table is compact with lots of high quality carving and stand wells being united by a solid bird's eye maple stretcher.

Literature
Doveston, Bird & Hull was a significant Manchester-based cabinet-making firm, active from around the 1860s to 1905, succeeding George Doveston and becoming Doveston, Davey, Hull & Company, known for producing high-quality Victorian Gothic furniture for the prosperous middle class and institutions, notably employing designer Bruce Talbert and supplying furniture to Manchester Town Hall. They were key players in the fashionable Gothic Revival movement, creating furniture reflecting "English Modern Medieval Work" for both domestic and international markets.
