Louis XVI Style Burr Walnut Bureau De Dame
Circa 1870, an important Louis XVI style burr walnut and ormolu mounted bureau de dame in the style of J.H.Riesener. The top flat section is ormolu mounted with foliate castings in the centre and the ends, and is inlaid with marquetry which is similar to the ormolu mounts. Beneath this is a concave shaped flat with an elaborate escutcheon and very stylish key. The marquetry on this is in floral and geometric patterns similar to the top, and there is a rosewood beaded edge and another ormolu mount on the bottom.
The flap opens on a very elaborate double hinge inside with a locking arm. The inside is kingwood crossbanded with a green velour writing surface. There are two panels which are separated by an ormolu mount, and these have a satinwood centre inlaid panel which slide and reveal velvet lined compartments. There is a small serpentine shaped crossbanded shelf. Beneath this are three drawers with wonderful cast ormolu handles. The walls of the interior are also crossbanded and have excellent colour and patination.
The sides and back of the bureau are bombe shaped and covered in ormolu mounts. Below the flap is a small section which is crossbanded and smothered in floral marquetry. The elegant cabriole shaped legs have chamfered corners on the front and sides which are crossbanded in kingwood. The mounts continue down the legs and finish in very stylish Rococo sabots. The whole piece is in excellent condition, sturdy and functional.
Size 86cm high x 83cm wide x 48cm deep.
