Liberty Mahogany Arts and Crafts Bureau c1880-1890
We have for sale a very decorative and usefully sized late Victorian arts and crafts mahogany bureau dating to around 1880-1890.
The bureau consists of an upper book or ornament shelf with a short fretwork back over two small cupboards with leaded stained glass doors each with two hand blown blue glass roundles over two drawers with original brass knobs over arched alcoves, the alcoves sit above a foldout writing flap, which when opened rests on the underlying open drawer to reveal a gently aged green baize interior. These components are all supported an open framed base consisting of sinusoidally cut slats to the sides panels mirroring those to the upper shelf, fine curved supports to the back, a lower shelf and further curved supports to the legs. The bureau is very well constructed, the drawer bases are of a good thickness as is the back of the bureau. The bureau was probably made for Liberty & Co of London in about 1880-1890 possibly to an oriental inspired design by Leonard Wyburd.
The bureau is 56 inches (142.2cm) high, 26.75 inches (68cm) wide, 15.5 inches (39.4cm) deep and is in a very good antique condition, with the aging one would expect from a well-used piece of antique furniture of this period. This is a functional yet decorative piece of furniture which would look great in any sized room.
