A Very Fine Antique Brass and Steel Doorstop
A Seated Hound or Retriever.
c. mid 19th century.
Although this is a 'known design', it is a much less commonly seen example.....and never before have I found one with such a perfect antique patina as this.
Normally the subject of overzealous and excessive polishing over many decades, these finely detailed and beautifully cast doorstops are often reduced to vague suggestions of what they once were. Not so here!
The seated hound, with expressive face, is beautifully rendered, the ruffles and waves of his fur still crisp and showing fine detail and the knuckled feet and claws resting on beautifully stylised leaves and foliage. The twisting handle again finely cast with a flowing acanthus design.
Exceptional colour, with a soft, low sheen and old black paint, partially rubbed, to the iron base.
