George III Concave Chest on Chest
Circa 1780, exhibition quality unusual concave chest on chest. With a shaped moulded cornice with beading and kingwood banding, and carved downward facing drops. There is a beading beneath these and it continues around the canted front. With unusual concave-shaped gables and kingwood banding to the cornices, which is framed in an ebony section.
There are 2 short concave drawers and 3 further graduating drawers below, all retaining their original cast brass and gilded swan neck handles with circular pommels and circular ring plates. The liners of the chest on chest are in oak and there is double ogee moulding between the top and bottom section, continuing around the front and following the form of the chest.
To the lower section, the first drawer is instead 1 short drawer with a double drawer beneath it, and the top drawer of the bottom section has a pull out section with a retractable slide. There are 2 small pulls carved out for moving the slide, which reveals various drawers and sections for paper work when pushed back. There is also a secret drawer to the side (behind the runners). The next drawer down is an unusual double drawer as it extends to a height of 37 cm and it is so large that brass runners support it and allow it to be pulled open easily. Beneath the bottom drawer is a simple beading, a stylish shaped apron at the front, and curved apron at the side. The whole piece stands on slightly raised bracket feet in the French style with a slight kick on the inside. It is in excellent condition.
