Fine Gillows Burr Oak Sliding Top Davenport

1 of 6
FINE early 19th century BURR OAK veneered sliding top davenport attributated to GILLOWS of LANCASTER. Although not stamped, as much of Gillows antique furniture wasn't, I am pretty certain this was made by Gillows, the quality is outstanding.
Four drawers to the front which are mahogany lined with super fine dovetails, brass locks, beautiful turned ebony knobs and original blue lining paper to the drawer bottoms. The reverse of the carcass is finished with dummy drawers but without knobs.
The piece has a large quarter turned moulding to the base with original turned feet with original castors inside. There is matching turned mouldings to the piece at the waist. The top section slides around half out with the underneath also veneered in burr oak. There is a small drawer to the left hand side which has been fitted for ink bottles and pens etc.
The lift up top has what looks to me to be the original shagreen leather top. The inside is fitted with small drawers.
The whole piece demonstrates outstanding craftsmanship, the best use of veneers and is a lovely rich colour.
If your looking for an early slide top davenpory they don't come much better than this one.
There are more photos available upon request.
SIZES 24" wide by 21" deep by 33" high overall
