PROVENANCE:
This bed was purchased from Boringdon Hall, Plymouth, England. Boringdon hall dates back to the Domesday Book (1086AD)where the first mention of a permanent structure was recorded. The name Boringdon originates from the Saxon Burth-Y-Don, meaning enchanted place on the hill. In 956AD Kind Edgar granted the Manor of Boringdon & Wembury to St Peter of Plympton, meaning it was the property of the priory until the dissolution of the monasteries by Henry VIII in 1539, he later granted the property to Thomas Wriothesely, the Earl of Southampton. Wriothesely sold the the manor to Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk, who was the father of Lady Jane Grey, who was once the Queen of England for just nine days. In its history the hall has hosted distinguished guests including the likes of Sir Francis Drake, Sir Hawkins Richard Grenville and Sir Walter Raleigh and William Parker. In 1582 the hall was inherited by by John Parker. The Parker family owned the property until the English Civil War broke out (1642-1651) when the property was seized and confiscated by Oliver Cromwells "Round Head" forces. When Kind Charles II was restored to the throne (1660AD), he granted the property and the families confiscated fortune back to the Parkers because their loyalty to the crown.
