Edwardian Dressing Table Pot w/ Silver Lid, 1903
This is an attractive Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot is oval with dogtooth and fan cut decoration around the body and a smooth base. The silver lid has embossed floral and scroll decoration surrounded by a crimped rim. There is a blank cartouche at the centre and the underside of the lid is gilded.
The dressing table pot is made in Birmingham by silversmith Arthur Willmore Pennington and dates to 1903. Arthur Pennington founded his firm in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter in the late 1880s. He specialised in small items, in particular for dressing antique tables and desks, and remained in business until at least the early 1920s.
Condition is extremely good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and no dings or dents in the silver, just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The dressing table pot measures 7.3cm / 2.9ins long by 3cm / 1.2ins wide and stands 3.2cm / 1.25ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 9.9g / 0.35oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 72.6g / 2.56oz.
The hallmarks, on the rim of the lid, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the A.W.P makers' mark for Arthur Willmore Pennington.
