Dark Lantern / Bullseye lantern
A good example of the increasingly rare, Dark Lantern or Bulls eye Lantern.
Used extensively by watchmen, military and police in The US & England from circa mid 1800's through to around 1920 when battery flashlights became available.
There are some references to the lamp being used even earlier.
The lamp would use a fuel within a reservoir. Early on the fuel would be whale oil.
A cap with a wick was mounted directly to the top of this reservoir, and in most models the cap also served as a port to fill it.
This lamp has certainly been repainted at some time, and done very well.
It is totally sound and in nice condition making it a good display piece.
It could originate from USA or could be English
There is an excellent reference piece online
