This is a good quality early 17th Century (period Charles II / restoration period, circa 1640 - 1680) oak coffer with sought after small proportions originating from either a church or an education facility in England. Churches and colleges used coffers that had two locks which required two people to simultaneously open the coffer at the same time as it was usually container money or valuable items. The coffer features the original three caved diamond panels to the front. The front panel also features the original reeded styles. The top features the original three square insert panels with reeded edges. The sides are paneled and the lid is attached with its original iron loop hinges. The coffer features original hand and peg construction. The back of the coffer features the original rough hewn paneled back and original floor. The coffer stands on the original 4” style feet and features a rich deep colour / patination. This is an important oak coffer having been around in the days of Charles II, Cromwell’s conquest of Ireland & Scotland and the Great Fire of London. The coffer would be ideal as a storage box in a bedroom in front of a bed.
This item would look great in a variety of rooms from the hall way, to the living room or bedroom in front of a bed. It has a beautiful deep rich oak patina which has been generated by the centuries of cleaning and care it has received.
Condition Report
The coffer and carvings are original. The coffer features the original carvings to the top and front, original iron loop hinges and the original floor and back. The coffer stands on the original 4” style feet, which is very rare to see. There are very old cup / plate marks to the two panels to the right hand side on the top of the coffer. One of the keyholes has been filled a long time ago. The coffer does not have a key. The coffer is free of active woodworm, solid in joint and ready to use. Considering the age of this coffer, it is in very good condition and does not detract from its attractive appeal.
