Banksway 1937 Art Deco Table Lamp Knight In Armour
We are delighted to offer for sale this stunning, rare and original Banksway Table Lamp, which bears the design registration number 826925 which dates it to 1937, as well as the Banksway logo, as shown. The lamp is made of bronzed copper, including the vertical square column, base and winged spear, which the knight is holding. The front of the stepped base has been polished to copper, as has the tip of the spear. The knight in armour is silver plated on copper. The lamp has a frosted glass flame or flambeau shade.
The winged spear is a type of long weapon with various names, but the example shown, is virtually identical to the ceremonial partisan or partizan, carried by The Yeomen of the Guard, which also have the tassel below the head.
This is a rare, possibly now unique, lamp, as we have been unable to find another example, although we have seen some art deco table lamps of ladies holding up circular glass shades by Banksway. The company also made ceiling lights, Dickensian door knockers, companion sets etc. However, there is virtually no information about the company. We did find from an old directory that Banksway items were manufactured by Harry J. Banks & Sons, 'Stella Works', South Road, Handsworth, Birmingham 19. The company is described as 'Designers, Modellers & Makers of Electric Light Fittings and 'Banksway' Productions.
The Lamp has been newly rewired in black silk covered braided and twisted wire, has a new lampholder, plug, inline switch and gallery. The frosted flambeau shade is a replacement. As with all electrical items it is recommended that it be checked by a qualified electrician prior to use.
Height: 26" - 66cm
Base: 5 3/8" 13.65cm
Material: Copper
Condition: Very good. There is no obvious damage and the wiring and fittings are new.
