A good antique walnut Italian cassone or marriage chest. The hinged solid and inverted breakfront top with gadrooned and carved edge. The centre panel with carved putti, grotesques, ribbons, fruit and a lions head all set within a carved and moulded frame. The front stiles having carved heads with feather head pieces above a shaped cartouche. The righthand panelled end with a scene of a church, bridge, trees and a house. The other end with scene of a stream, bridge, trees and a hotel with carved writing “ Via Alla Strada Vencia". The coffer is raised on fabulous mythological creatures with supporting back and floor boards. Condition - Very good with a few non active old wood worm holes commensurate with age and use.
