Antique Teak Merchant Chest
This Antique teak merchant chest was made in the 19thc. for a wealthy merchant or a family of great importance.
Made of teak, that is strong and durable to survive the rigours of the perilous journeys the owners of this had to take. It was made to store valuables, gold, silver, silks, and other precious items.
The chest is a rectangular shape with a lifting lid that opens to reveal a full area for storage.
The outside has lovely steel corner straps that were secured to the chest not only for decoration, but also to provide strength and protection as it was hauled around on the wagons and sailing ships as it was transported.
To each end there are substantial iron carrying handles.
At the rear is a charming old blacksmiths repair, what caused the damage we can only speculate but it dos stir the imagination. We have left this and not put an invisible repair as it is an 'honourable scar' and part of this chests tapestry of life.
This will not only provide fantastic storage but also make a wonderful coffee table, that will not only look great but also an interesting conversation piece.
Imagine the stories this Antique teak merchant chest could tell, the adventures and scrapes it has got through in its long service.
