Antique Military/Campaign Chest
An Attractive Mid 19th Century Teak Military/Campaign Chest, of good colour and figuring to the drawer fronts. The chest still retains many original features, including the brass locks all stamped Hobbs and Co. All the locks are still in working order. All the brassware to the ash lined drawers are original as are the screw-in-feet to the base, often lost or discarded during military conflict. The chest features a deep central drawer, possibly used for the storage of military hats.
Teak was used extensively for military chests. "Teak, which had the advantage of only minimally expanding and contracting when exposed to extremes in temperature and humidity, was probably the most commonly used wood. It was resistant to woodworm, termites, and the occasional splash of seawater." Source of information British Campaign Furniture, Elegance Under Canvas 1740 - 1914 by Nicholas A Brawer page 97.
VIEWING AND ADVICE PRIOR TO PURCHASE
We do encourage clients to view items at our premises in Leicestershire prior to purchase if possible. Please do ring us to make the arrangements. However, we realise that this is not always an option, particularly for overseas clients. We take great care when photographing stock items, to ensure quality and colour is fairly represented. Our detailed condition reports are available on all items and are as accurate as possible. On many items we have additional photographs reflecting condition and further detail, available on request. If you require further images on any item we are pleased to do this for you. We realise that to purchase without viewing the goods is a huge leap of faith. For this reason we are only too happy to talk to you directly about any item or any concerns or queries you may have before buying. Our mobile telephone number 077 100 19045 is possibly the best form of contact and is available to you until 9.00 pm GMT 7 days a week.
