An Art Nouveau Inlaid Walnut Wardrobe
This Glasgow School double wardrobe is made of solid walnut and, in the centre, has a peacock beautifully inlaid using mother-of-pearl and a variety of woods. Either side are two mirrored doors, with pierced and planished brass handles, that open to reveal hooks and a hanging rail. Below is a drawer with an inlaid heart and stylish brass handles. The top section lifts off the drawer base for ease of handling.
It was originally retailed by A.Gardner & Son of Glasgow, a renowned firm whose Jamaica Street premises was, and remains (though now as a pub), an architectural gem of the city. It does, however, bear stylistic and constructional similarities to the work of Shapland & Petter, who were known to supply a company called Gardner. This may be a Devon-made piece of Glasgow School antique furniture.
It measures 126.5cm wide, 203cm high and 48cm deep.
It is in good and original condition with the inlay entirely intact (except for two tiny cracks to one piece of mother-of-pearl). It has a few minor knocks and superficial scratches and one door has had filler sympathetically applied to a small loss to the bottom corner. The doors, though not the drawer, have their keys and both locks are functioning.
