Description:
Here is a fine quality antique set of 8 Georgian style dining chairs, in the style of the Chippendale period, with ribbon backs, constructed during the late Victorian period, circa 1880, with newly upholstered seats, in excellent condition. The 8 Georgian style dining chairs are constructed of solid mahogany, designed with elegant pierced ribbon shaped backs, incorporating finely carved floral motifs, replicated on the ears, and acanthus leaf scroll carvings on the carver arms, flanked by moulded vertical rails.
The stuff over seats have been newly upholstered in top quality hard wearing antique gold chenille upholstery, with traditional hessian material to the underside. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are firm but comfortable you do not sink into the seat. These are a heavy set of chairs which indicates they are of very good quality. The 8 Georgian style dining chairs are raised on tapering moulded legs, terminating on spade feet to the front, with sabre legs to the rear, united by a “H” stretcher for additional strength. The armchairs mirror the design of the singles, with the addition of two splayed scroll arms, secured by shaped vertical supports. Please note, this is a true set of 8 Georgian style dining chairs they have not been matched together from smaller sets of similar chairs.
The 8 Georgian style dining chairs feature a rich dark brown mahogany colour. The chair frames have been cleaned and French polished by hand, to a professional standard in our workshop, therefore they boast a lovely colour and patination.
The 8 Georgian style dining chairs would look superb in the dining room or boardroom. They would certainly grace any home and are a great investment as they are extremely functional. So don't miss out on your chance to own a lovely piece of furniture.
History of Thomas Chippendale:
Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779) was a cabinet-maker in London, designing furniture in the mid-Georgian, English Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. In 1754 he published a book of his designs in a trade catalogue titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director—the most important collection of furniture designs published in England to that point which created a mass market for furniture—upon which success he became renowned. According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, "so influential were his designs, in Britain and throughout Europe and America, that 'Chippendale' became a shorthand description for any furniture similar to his director designs". The designs are regarded as representing the current British fashion for furniture of that period and are now reproduced globally.
After working as a journeyman cabinet maker in London, during 1754, he became the first cabinet-maker to publish a book of his designs, titled The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director. It is regarded as the "first comprehensive trade catalogue of its kind". According to The New York Times, "customers could browse, select a design and then order a piece of furniture". Three editions were published, the first in 1754, followed by a virtual reprint in 1755, and finally a revised and enlarged edition in 1762, by which time Chippendale's illustrated designs began to show signs of Neoclassicism. Chippendale had considerable competition during his active years, most notably from Ince and Mayhew. From the 1760's Chippendale was influenced heavily by the Neoclassical work of architect Robert Adam.
He was buried 16 November 1779, according to the records of St Martin-in-the-Fields, in the cemetery since built upon by the National Gallery. Chippendale furniture is much valued a padouk cabinet that was offered for auction during 2008 sold for £2,729,250. Source:
