Antique Treen
Treen is an old word meaning wooden 'of a tree'. Treen or treenware is used now as a collective term for small wooden hand carved functional household objects. Before the advent of the use of silver, pewter and ceramics in the late 17th century everyday household objects and tableware were all pretty much made of wood. Wooden kitchenware items included treen bowls, spoons, peppermills, spice towers, napkin rings, egg cups and nutcrackers. Antique treen snuff boxes, boot trees, trinket and puzzle boxes and even truncheons are popular with collectors. Miniature furniture usually made by apprentices is often classed as treenware too. Treen is popular because it is organic, functional, hand crafted and often carries a great patina.
