WW1 Verners Pattern Mark VIII Compass
For sale we have a WW1 Verners pattern VIII compass.
William Willoughby Cole Verner was a colonel in The Rifle Brigade. He acquired his commission in 1874, was posted to Gibralter and later served in the Sudan campaign(Mahdist Revolt) of 1884-85, and the Boer War. In 1895 he invented the Verner pattern marching compass. This compass was a prismatic dry card compass with a bearing lock and a transit lock. There were a number of versions of the compass and the last of these (pattern IX) was used right up until WW2 before being superseded by what was known as the Mk III prismatic compass.
The Verners pattern VII and VIII compasses date to the later part of WW1 (1917-1918), with the Pattern VIII differing from the Pattern VII because of an arm fitted to the lid. This arm automatically closes the transit lock on closure of the lid, prior to this the transit lock had to be operated manually.
This particular Verners Pattern VIII compass measures approximately 2 inches (5cm) in diameter and is in a very good fully functional condition. The case consists of an aluminium card, a brass base and a black painted brass lid. The prism flicks up beautifully to allow the easy reading of the dial and the transit lock clicks neatly into position easily on closure of the lid. There is a little bit of wear to the black enameling of the lid and a little bit of wear to the dial, but other than that the compass is in a very good condition considering it has survived the trenches.
