General service medal Malaya bar
The General Service Medal was instituted in 1918 to recognise minor Army or Air Force operations, which do not earn any other specific medal.
The obverse shows the Monarch's head, the reverse shows the figure of Victory (aka Victoria Roman goddess of victory) carrying a trident, and bestowing a wreath on the emblems of the army and the air force (sword and wings).
There are then seventeen different bars possible, each of which identify the specific operation for which this medal is being awarded.
This particular medal carries the Malaya bar.
To earn this medal the recipient had to have served against communist guerilla forces in Malaya between 16th June 1948 and 31st July 1960, or in the colony of Singapore between 16th June 1948 and 31st January 1959.
The medal, as named on the edge, was issued to "21131357 RF N. Maite Gurung 2 G R" (a Rifleman with the 2nd Gurkha Rifles). It was issued between 1948 and 1952 (it bears the head of King George VI).
The medal is full size, and measures approximately 3.5 cm (1.5") in diameter.
