Cased Brass Bar-Limb Monocular Microscope c1850
A good mid-19th century brass monocular microscope in a fitted mahogany case c1850. The microscope is of lacquered brass with bar-limb construction introduced by Andrew Ross in 1842 and used by other makers such as Watson and Cary in the 1840s and 1850s. Square platform with retaining clips and with adjustable mirror below. Single eyepiece lens and two objective lenses – spare held in a brass canister which holds either lens. Tripod base on a fitted mahogany board which slides into and is retained within the case. Eyepiece and barrel unscrew and are located separately within the case. Small fitted drawer with bone pull-handle holding microscope slides (including two prepared specimen slides) and aquatic container. The microscope is in a fitted mahogany case with fold-down brass handle. Hinged door with inlaid bone escutcheon and original working lock and key. Case measures 22 cm in height, 18 cm width and 14 cm depth.
This cased microscope is in overall very good condition commensurate with age and use. Optics are in good working order. Detachable sections and lenses all unscrew/screw smoothly. The microscope retains its original lacquer which has some losses and surface tarnish marks as seen in images. Case is solid and sound throughout - minor splits due to age of the mahogany and very minor marks from use. Internally in very good condition. Please see further images on our website as these form an important part of the description. Viewing welcomed - please contact us in advance.
