A wonderful early Pantochronometer (combination of a Compass & Sundial) dating to the Georgian era, around 1825. The rich dark wooden turned case is lovely and original with a age hairline crack to the top, common in these really old examples. The earliest time-keepers were haphazard in performance and the only means of checking their accuracy was to compare them from those obtained by a sundial.

The dial is signed Charles Essex & Co., London and also "Entered at Stationers Hall". The compass is working well and finds north with ease. The dial is protected by the original crystal dome without damage. Charles Essex is known to have worked in London between 1824 and 1828.

An added bonus is the original Irish retailer's label still retained on the inside of the turned lid J. Lynch, Optician, 26 Capel Street (Dublin). James Lynch II invented, manufactured and sold instruments lectured at the Royal Dublin Society for 34 years and between 1785 and 1833 was a lecturer in natural philosophy, including astronomy at Trinity College in Dublin.

Lovely original condition, having a diameter measuring 2 1/4" in diameter.
