19th Century Carved Coconut 'bugbear' Powder shot Flask.

A naïve coconut shell “bugbear” powder flask finely carved with an open mouth and eye sockets. Circa 1805.

“Bugbear” coconut shell powder flasks were reputedly carved by sailors or soldiers who visited the East or West Indies in the late 18th/early 19th centuries, and had access to green coconut shells which were easier to carve than dried ones.

A very unique and highly collectable item rarely found.

Excellent condition for age with excellent patina.
