Wooden Dial Chisel Bottom Drop-Dial by Thwaites
A totally original example of a fine wall clock.
The substantial 8 day duration, 5 shaped pillar, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, long pendulum with a carved rod, tapered plates the front of which bears the maker's name of "J THWAITES" also numbered "3511" Dating it precisely and is fitted to the case with a false dial.
Behind an integral one-piece, bowed wooden dial that is 12 5/8" in diameter and raised from the one-piece of mahogany from which the dial, surround and bezel seating are turned. The dial portion has it's original white background paint and has black outer Arabic quarter numerals, a divided minute track with hour triangles and inner, Roman hour numerals. The matching steel hands are 'spade' style and all behind a 14" diameter well executed, cast brass, 'Sheraton' hinged and locking bezel with a high bowed glass.
The dark Cuban mahogany case has a well-turned dial surround and bezel seating and is of excellent colour and patina as is the back box. This has an access door to the right side, a well-figured front panel flanked by classically shaped ears and is above a returned dividing moulding to 3 sides. The chisel bottom is also well-figured and has a locking door with moulded edges.
This clock really does tick a lot of boxes. My photographic skills are not adequate to show the clock in its true light and the actual appearance is better than the pictures show and in the correct lighting it looks amazing. The sheer originality, colour and patina of this superior clock are a joy to behold. John Thwaites was a master of the Clockmaker's Company no less than 3 times and later went on to form the famous partnership 'Thwaites & Reed' in 1816. This clock would be acceptable for any collection of fine clocks.

Maker John Thwaites
Condition The movement is complete however, the gut line is broken and it is in dire need of a complete overhaul to bring it back to its former glory. It has had a new escape wheel fitted long ago and this has not been 'crossed out' but has been excellently carried out.
The dial shows signs of wear and staining to the background which has never been repainted. The hands, bezel and locks are excellent and the case is superb.
A timescale for the work to restore the movement can be advised upon enquiry.
