William Lawson of Newton-under-willows. 8 day LC English oak Longcase %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
An 8 day antique clock by William Lawson who worked in Lancashire during the middle to late 18th century. He was a maker of some very fine antique clocks many in mahogany cases with moon roller to the arch. This mostly oak case with finely engraved brass dial is in excellent condition. Completely all original comes with a solid oak backboard. The makers of the northwest tended to use mahogany decoration in place of the more commonly brass for the case details like capitals to hood columns and patera to the swan necks.
The quality 8 day movement has been recently cleaned but no major work was required. Many fine clocks of this style were produced in the northwest and always its uncertain who supplied the cases though The company of Gillows must have influenced local case makers. Case mouldings from this area are identical and I suspect all were supplied to the makers possible by Gillows themselves.
