Whytock & Reid Mahogany Jardinière
Circa 1920, exhibition quality freestanding mahogany carved jardinière by Whytock & Reid of Edinburgh. This piece may have been designed by Sir Robert Lorimer. The large rectangular trough shaped jardinière is solid mahogany with canted corners, a double moulded edge on the inside and the original metal liner. The canted corners form the legs, at the top is foliate carving, classical on the top and Lorimer-esque beneath. The legs have reeding and taper down to a stylish Lorimer foot. There is a simple apron at the sides but at the front is a carved apron and again has Lorimer-esque type carving. Quite substantial piece with excellent colour.
