Walnut longcase clock with Penny Moon & Tidal indicator
A fine quality 1730s walnut longcase clock, the dial with penny moon combined with a tidal time indicator. It is signed for John Bowen, a renowned maker of very fine antique clocks (1718-1734).
The 12" one-piece break-arch brass dial is signed to the silvered chapter ring which encloses a matted centre with subsidiary seconds dial and calendar aperture. The arch has a penny moon showing the phases, and a silvered ring for the dating of the moon, alongside a dial for tide time indication. The spandrels are finely cast.
Original matching black steel hands.
The well figured case has long wavy arched door with six matched panels of veneer over the original base with skirted plinth. The hood has an arched moulded pediment above an intricate blind fret carved panel. The hood pilasters have giltwood caps and bases.
The eight-day movement is rack striking on a bell, with two brass capped weights.
Height 86.5"
The Clockmakers of Bristol 1650-1900, by A.J. Moore has a full page illustrating this particular antique clock (see page 110).
