Victorian Teak Military Chest
Victorian teak military chest
This Victorian teak campaign chest was made circa 1870.
Here we have this Victorian trunk that would have been used by a British officer to transport his uniforms and valuables around the Empire.
This chest is made of teak, a timber that is able to stand up to the rigours of the journeys the chest would have to be put through.
Teak is a strong hardwood but is also resistant to seawater and so was another good reason to use it as this chest was likely to have been lashed to the deck of ships on its journeys around the world.
The lid opens to real an open space for full storage.
The flush brass corners were not only for decorative purposes, but more importantly they were inset to give strength and protection while this was being loaded and unloaded from pack horses, camels, wagons and ships. On this chest the brass straps are screwed in place rather than nailed, telling us that this was the more expensive version rather than being secured by nails.
These chests are fantastic and can be used in many areas of the home. Imagine the conversations that will be struck up with your family and friends as you contemplate the history and adventures this would have been through. It was made at a time when there were many conflicts in the East, and the officer would need this very portable and strong chest to carry his personal items as well as his uniforms on the many different locations and conflicts he was posted to.
This is of a delightful small size and so could double as a great coffee table as well as storage in a cottage or apartment.
This Victorian brass bound campaign trunk has the Hingstons Antiques brand guarantee plate. This gives you the peace of mind that this meets the quality and criteria you expect when purchasing from Hingstons Antiques.
